2:41 p.m. - 2002-03-05 About 3 hours ago, the word crap didn't even begin to describe my previous 24 hours. During the evening yesterday, my ankle got progressively worse, and eventually swelled up to the approximate size of a tennis ball. I could barely walk. Many people were very nice to me, though, and as I sat in the bar, someone went to get ice for my ankle, and I sat around for an hour or so with my leg up on the table, holding a wet, drippy bag of ice to it and drinking. Yeah, that was a good night, and I think the people around me appreciated my stinky foot on the table around their drinks. I decided to go to bed and, on the advice of a nice girl on my bus, I stuffed my backpack under the mattress to elevate my foot as I slept. This, however, caused a bit of a problem, because as I tried to lift myself on to the top bunk of the bed, I lost my balance. Now, I would have been fine if not for my ankle, for when I tried to stop my fall by using my sore ankle to brace myself, it kind of gave way and I fell to the ground, wacking my side against the bunk next to me. With a bruised ego, I apologized to the 5 other people in the room (including the girl that I sort of fell on) and made my into bed successfully on the second attempt. Eventually, I fell asleep. Later on, though, I woke up in the middle of the night with nature calling (drinking will do that to you). However, I was slightly nervous about getting out of bed and getting back in considering my previous experience that night. So, I didn't. At about 7:30, I woke and just could NOT wait any more and managed to get myself out of bed very gingerly. No one laughed at me this time. When I woke up the next morning, my ankle was no better and I felt like I had cracked a rib. So, needless to say, I wasn't going to be doing any fun hikes up glaciers today. Sucks to be me. However, things are looking up. Anna, my travelling friend, was suppposed to do the full hike today, but ended up cutting it short because of bad ankle problems. She was slightly disappointed, so we've decided to do a helicopter ride around the glaciers. It's expensive, but damnit, we've been injured and deserve to see the freaking glaciers, right!?! So, that's my story. I felt you would all get a real kick out of my follies. It would seem that it's not the adventure sports that are going to kill me in NZ, it's just my own stupidity. HOpefully, I will survive, I mean, I still have 2 and a half weeks left. =)
